Our Story

Our roots go back more than 20 years as a spin-off company from the University of Michigan. Michigan Aerospace is a unique R&D company that is completely bootstrapped. Since our inception, we expanded well beyond aerospace, and are working to develop solutions to complex environmental, agricultural, and biomedical challenges.

Along the way, we have helped countless other start-up companies bring their meaningful ideas to life. We created Springmatter to reflect our greater mission.

We are committed to having a positive impact, creating beneficial social and environmental transformation and promoting Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. The theme of Springmatter is to ‘Start Something Meaningful,’ but we knew there was still a critical piece missing from our businesses and in our society — entire populations of people who want to share their talents with the world, but are not afforded equitable opportunities.

We established our non-profit 501c3 Springmatter Fund to address this problem and give every person an opportunity to ‘Live Meaningfully.’ Our Springmatter Fund is housed within the Ann Arbor Area Community Foundation (AAACF).

We support diversity in the next generation of STEAM professionals through place-based education, internships, mentorships, job opportunities, and community advocacy. The unifying concept is to promote Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and let it be known to our young people that we value differences.

We share Dr. King’s vision of a World House in which every person has the right to live authentically, peacefully, and productively. Our long-term vision is to extend access to stable, high-paying employment in STEAM fields to all people and provide equitable access to education, employment, and healthcare.
