Open Waters | Open Minds is the first phase of the pilot project and will be deployed in K-12 settings with university and community partners starting in 2017. In subsequent phases, the network will be expanded into monitoring the biosphere of our planet: Open Earth | Open Minds. And finally, beyond the boundaries of our world: Open Galaxy | Open Minds.
Schools can utilize the existing network to create a living, evolving PBL model that students can follow from elementary all the way through high school. Learning modules are grade-appropriate and can cover a wide range of course materials, including weather and the environment, the biology of ecosystems, the science and math of sensors and data analysis, the social and economic impact of extreme weather and pollution, and the use of multi-media to communicate with other schools and the community at large.
Students with different skills, backgrounds, and perspectives working together to solve complex problems in their own communities will demonstrate the power and value of diversity and inclusion.
